Army Marathon Runners Do Well in ‘Colombo Marathon’

Sri Lanka Army runners who competed in the 16th Lanka Sports Reizen (LSR) ‘Colombo Marathon’ which was kicked off on Sunday (2) from Colombo to Wattala, secured prominent places, winning the first place in the Half Marathon event and the fourth place in the Men’s race.

Sponsored by Sri Lankan Airlines, the ‘Colombo Marathon’ gave the win (Half Marathon) to Kumar Samugeshwaran of the Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment. It was his first achievement in a public marathon event after he finished third in the recently-concluded Defence Services Games’.

Clocking 2 hours, 28 minutes and 48 seconds, the 25 year old Dilan Sandaruwan of Sri Lanka Engineers Regiment won the 4th place in the ‘Colombo Marathon’.

A total of 7,500 competitors from Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka based 252 foreigners took part in the marathon which began from the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo and ended in Wattala.

‘Colombo Marathon’ was flagged off by former Sri Lanka marathon runner R.A. Wimalasena Perera of the Army who took part in the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games.

The winners of the 10 kilometre race were given their awards by bronze medallist at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Indika Priyantha Herath.
