ARMY TO JOIN SECOND PHASE IN NATIONAL DENGUE CONTROL CAMPAIGN

Press Release

Sri Lanka Army, which actively contributed to the National Dengue Control drive, initiated by Ministry of Health a couple of weeks ago, has been once again requested to join its second phase of the campaign, scheduled for December 2-3, 2010.

A large contingent of Army personnel across island-wide field formations, deployed in the north, east, west and the south, on the instructions of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, launched massive clean-up campaigns early October this year to coincide with the 61st anniversary of the Army.

Appreciative of the Army contribution to the first phase of the project, Health Ministry, noting the relative drop in the numbers affected by Dengue in the past two months, has once again requested the Army support for this second phase of the Special National Dengue Control week beginning on Thursday (2), particularly in the wake of continuing torrential rains.

Accordingly, hundreds of Army personnel in coordination with officials of the Provincial and District Directors of Health Services are to inspect and clean public places and homesteads in respective areas. Troops on the directions of related commanders in their formations will also supply required equipment and liaise with various public organizations and other civilians, expected to join the mammoth project, beginning today (2).
