Army Initiatives Get First Apparel Factory to Mullaittivu

Initiatives launched by the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) to provide employment openings to young women in Mullaittivu area, bore fruits when the first-ever Hirdramani apparel factory was opened during a simple ceremony on Wednesday (4).

SFHQ-MLT, commanded by Major General Jagath Dias, realizing the need to create more employment openings to female job aspirants, commenced talks with the Hirdramani Pvt Ltd, one of the top apparel industries in the country with the intention of having a factory established in Mullaittivu area as an alternative to the burning question of unemployment.

After a feasible study in this direction, in March 2014 the said apparel company agreed to set up one factory in response to the Army request which received the blessings of the Army Headquarters.

Mullaittivu District Secretariat in collaboration with the Hirdramani management and SFHQ-MLT identified a state land location for establishment of the factory before the first round of interviews, was conducted in June 2014 in Puthukkudiyiruppu area.

Initially, out of 160 interviewees, the company selected 35 potential employees under the first phase and those were given a two-month long training inside an Army provided building on temporary basis.

However, on 12 October 2014, the foundation stone for construction of the factory was laid in the state land, following successful negotiations. In addition, during this period, interviews that were held continuously, selected nearly 600 suitable applicants who could be employed as the factory begins to expand its production process.

The climax of the project reached on Wednesday (4) when the Hirdramani management officials, Mr N Vedanayagam, District Secretary for Mullaittivu, Major General Jagath Dias, Commander, SFHQ-MLT, ceremonially opened its newest factory at Mullaittivu, meant to provide employment to young ladies in the province.

A gathering of state officials, new employees, civilians and officers of the Security Force Headquarters in Mullaittivu attended the opening ceremony on Wednesday (4).
