Army Hospital Blood Bank Gets New Apheresis Machine

Blood Bank at Narahenpita Army Hospital, entering one more phase of the most modern medical technologies in the world, has now set up its own new Apheresis Machine for Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), following initiatives taken by Directorate of Medical Services.

The device is capable of receiving blood removed from a patient and separating it into its various components: plasma, platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells while isolating those components from one another as wished through the machine.

The multipurpose machine has the capability of re-infusing unwanted components back to the patient and this would enormously help blood donors since remaining blood after extracting only platelets, could easily be returned to the  donor.

With the installation of the Apheresis Machine, the Army Hospital Blood Bank is also capable of providing the world-recognized treatment for Cancer varieties using Hematopoietic stem cell transplantations.

TPE is the treatment for the Guillain Barre Syndrome which otherwise is to be a lethal outcome.
