Army handball Once Again Proves Their Dominance in the National Handball Arena

Sri Lanka Army Handball Team, the defending champions of the Defence Services Tournament once again proved their dominance in the field by winning the Championship trophy, Runners up trophy, Best Player Trophy and the Best Goal Keeper award of the Open Invitation Tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Air Force to mark its 60th Anniversary Celebrations.

This Glamorously well-organized day and night tourney which was held at the Rifle Green Grounds -Colombo giving much publicity to this newly introduced sport in the country, the officials of the Handball Federation of Sri Lanka played a pivotal role in making the tourney a success.

06 teams with 02 teams from the Sri Lanka Army (A & B), Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Navy, Dept of Prisons and Ampara District Handball Club contested for the Championship Trophy on league basis and both Army teams finally emerged in the final battle beating the rest conveniently.

Brigadier Rohana Bandara, Director, Directorate of Sports Sri Lanka Army graced the finals as the Chief Guest and Mr Hemasiri Fernando, President National Olympic Committee and President, Handball Federation of Sri Lanka attended as the Guest of Honour in the presence of many distinguished invitees and tri service senior officers in attendance.

The Army Handball Committee has taken many initiatives in the recent past to develop and popularise this sport within the organisation and Chairman, Army Handball Brigadier Dampath Fernando who is also the Secretary General of the Handball Federation of Sri Lanka is confident of elevating the standard of Handball in the Army to a level of esteem.
