Army Doctors Learn ‘Advanced Life Support’

Department of Anaesthesia and Pain management in the Army Hospital, Colombo, in collaboration with the College of Anaesthesiologists and Intensivists of Sri Lanka successfully conducted their second one-day workshop on ‘Advanced Life Support’ for doctors in the Army Hospital, Colombo at the Army Hospital main auditorium on Tuesday (21). Workshop on the same topic was conducted on 12 January 2016 at the same location for a different group of Army personnel.

‘Advanced Life Support’ is the support given to a cardiac arrest (ceased heart activity) patient, trying to revive life back to a technically dead patient. As doctors who are involved in the first line of emergencies and manmade or natural disasters, training for civil and military doctors who are working for the Sri Lanka Army remains a must, the workshop was told.

Keeping up with the changing world trends, Department of Anaesthesia and Pain management is conducting the ‘Advanced Life Support’ course every three months at the Army Hospital, Colombo. This workshop is designed in line with the European Resuscitation Council guidelines, which is the accepted standard around the globe.

As advised by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Chrishanthe de Silva and under the guidance of Director General of Army Health Services, Major General Sanjeewa Munasinghe, this workshop was coordinated by Major W.P.Y.G Pathirana.

Colonel Crishantha Fernando, Director at the Army Hospital, Colombo has been the strength behind the course, encouraging Colonel Dhawala Perera (Head of Department of Anaesthesia) and Lieutenant Colonel Champika Abeysinghe (Course Director) to continue with the workshop  in spite of their busy schedules.

Dr. Mithrajee Premarathne (Consultant Anaesthesiologist and the Chair – Working committee on resuscitation of College of Anaesthesiologists and Intensivists of Sri Lanka) was present at the course as the chief instructor to make the event more productive.

Course Director is planning to expand this Workshop to the doctors in peripheral Army Hospitals too in the near future and later, to all officers and other ranks in the Sri Lanka Army as a ‘Basic Life Support course’, the inaugural session was told.
