Army Cricket to be Developed & Promoted Further

In the face of the series of outstanding gains in the field of Army cricket in the most recent past, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army this morning (22), provided an impetuous towards the promotion of cricket in the organization by awarding a cash grant of Rs 5 million to the Army Cricket Committee.

Major General P.W.B Jayasundara, Chairman, Army Cricket Committee who is also the Army’s Master General Ordnance - designate received the cheque to this effect after meeting the Commander of the Army at the Army Headquarters.

Lieutenant General De Silva reviewing the progress of Army Cricket on the occasion, commented saying that the Cricket Committee has a bigger role to play in selecting the best of the best among soldier cricketers at ground level since the Army has the ability to groom them to reach national levels.

A few of the recent achievements of Army cricketers are as follows;

a.       In June, the Women’s Division I Cricket Tournament, ‘A’ team of Army woman cricketers carried the Championship and the ‘B’ team became the first runner-up at MCA ground, Colombo.

b.       During Women’s Division I T-20 Cricket Tournament at CCC ground in July, Army ‘A’ team emerged the runner-up.

c.       In the under 20 Division I Cricket Tournament (limited overs) played at SSC ground, Army team secured the first runner-up slot.

d.       In the T-20 Cricket Tournament, played at Keththarama R. Premadasa Cricket Ground, the Army team carried away the championship.
