Army Coordination Builds New Church &;amp; Dormitory in Pesalai

Formal inauguration of the newly built Church plus the new hall of residence for the Sisters of Charity, resident in the Holy Mary Convent (Nirmala Mariya Kanyaramaya) at Pesalai, Mannar took place during the weekend with the participation of clergy and others.

25 Gemunu Watch (GW) troops serving Pesalai town sector under 543 Brigade, attached to 54 Division Headquarters were approached by Convent authorities a few moths ago over the long-felt need of a separate dormitory building and a Church unit for prayers since the Convent houses more than 20 orphaned girls in addition to resident Sisters.

The Sri Lankan expatriate, Mr Manilal Fernando in Canada generously offered his monetary assistance for construction of those two new units, following initiatives taken by the Army troops serving the 54 Division.

Within a matter of few weeks, Engineer troops with the support of civil sector expertise, construction of those two buildings was completed to the best satisfaction of resident Sisters in the Convent.

Last Saturday (24) at 10.00 a.m. both constructions were ceremonially opened by Brigadier M.A.M Dias, 54 Division General Officer Commanding after a brief ceremony at the premises. A special plaque to signify the opening was also unveiled before inauguration of both buildings took place.    

Rev Dilantha of the Badulla Diocese, 543 Brigade Commander, Colonel E.N Ramanayaka, 25 GW Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel M.K.S.S.P Jayasinghe, Sisters, Clergy and the Convent’s inmates attended the opening ceremony.
