Army Coordinates Distribution of Artificial Limbs to Civilians

In what could be considered as a gesture of humanity, reconciliation and goodwill, the Security Force Headquarters-Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) coordinated the distribution of artificial limbs to 48 war-affected civilians during a simple ceremony, held at Vellamullivaikkal School on Friday (16).

Kundasale-based Centre for the Handicapped implemented the project sponsored by the USAID at a cost of Rs 2.2 million. The victims, eligible for receipt of those support devices were selected by the Grama Niladari (State officials for the area) and community leaders in the area after the SFHQ-MLT was informed of this intended donation a few weeks ago.

Experts and technicians of the Centre for the Handicapped, together with Major General Dampath Fernando, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu were present during the distribution ceremony.

Donors from Kandy during August and November this year at the request of the SFHQ-MLT visited those recipients in the company of Grama Niladari and selected measurements of the recipients.

SFHQ-MLT earlier in July this year made a similar gesture and distributed a separate stock of 25 artificial limbs with the support of Grama Niladari and community leaders.

Grama Niladari, community leaders relatives of recipients and civilians of the area were present at the occasion.
