Army Chief Promotes Soldier Who Rescued Infant Girl, Prasandani in Mullaittivu

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, appreciative of the bravery, shown by Private M.P.S.S Sanjeewa of 19 Gemunu Watch (GW) in 593 Brigade who rescued the life of the drowning 14-month infant at Keppapilau model village, Mullaittivu, promoted him to the rank of Lance Corporal after inviting him to the Commander’s office Thursday (16) afternoon.

The infant girl, Prasandani Jenistar (14 months) accidentally fell into a 30-ft deep well at Keppapilau Model Village, Mullaittivu and a team of Army personnel in the nearby detachment rushed to the scene and rescued the precious life despite grave threats to their own lives on Sunday (12).
 
Lieutenant General Ratnayake, praising the heroic act, has already recommended him for the award of Weerodara Vibhushanaya (WV) to the said soldier who descended into the well in no time with the support of the hanging rope of the bucket.  

On the same occasion, 2 Lieutenant H.R.N Sanjeewa, Sergeant W.A.M.P Wijesinghe and Corporal H.P.S Hewathilake of 4 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) who had actively taken part in the rescue operation were also awarded special appreciative certificates as tokens of recognition of their timely commitment.

Major General Presad Samarasinghe, Chief of Staff, and Brigadier N Dharmarathne, Director Personal Administration were also present at the Commander’s office.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday (14) Major General Jagath Dias, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) felicitated the same group of soldiers, engaged in the rescue effort after inviting them to the SFHQ-MLT Headquarters.

After lauding their roles, Major General Dias spoke to each and everyone and congratulated them personally. Brigadier N.A.P.C Napagoda, General Officer Commanding, 59 Division, Lieutenant Colonel G.D.J.C Premathilake, Commanding Officer, 4 SLLI serving the 593 Brigade were present at the event.
