Army Chief Makes Historic Donation to Enhance Welfare of Civil Staff


Nearly 5800 members of the Sri Lanka Army’s Civilians’ Benefit Association (CBA) of the Directorate of Civil Administration, due to a historic gesture of goodwill donation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, are to be benefitted further, enabling the CBA to provide enhanced welfare projects towards its members.  

It all happened on Friday (24) when the Commander as the Chief Guest at the CBA’s 23rd Annual General Meeting (AGM), pledged a monetary grant of Rs 5 million towards the CBA’s fund, to further promote its welfare roles, such as payment of gratuity, grant of funeral aids, supply of pension reliefs, award of scholarships, offer of loans to members, medical grants, etc.

In its lifespan of 23 years, it was the first time an incumbent Commander of the Army participated in the CBA’s AGM and pledged this historic donation of Rs 5 million to the CBA.  

Mr Gamini Mahagamage, Director, Directorate of Civil Administration on Tuesday (28), in his capacity as the Chairman, CBA accepted the cheque from the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake to the value of Rs 5 million.

Mr Mahagamage, appreciating the Commander’s sensitive and concerned thoughtfulness towards members of the civil staff in the Army, thanked the Commander on behalf of the membership in the CBA upon receipt of the donation.

The occasion was witnessed by Chief of Staff, Major General Crishantha De Silva, Adjutant General, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Director General General Staff, Major General S.W.L Daulagala, Military Secretary, Major General Amal Karunasekara and the Military Assistant.

In his brief address to the AGM on Friday (24), Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army spoke high of numerous services and valuable contribution the civil sector in the Army provides all the time.

‘Members of the civil staff hand in hand with Army personnel have been playing a silent, but an invaluable role to the Army, although they are not in the uniform staff. I must commend them for what they have so far done and what they are performing at present. In the future, more attention will definitely be paid to enhancement of their welfare needs, employment tasks and all other matters,’ the Commander was on record saying.
