Army Boxers Retain Clifford Cup

The Army emerged the Clifford Cup boxing champions for the year 2011 when they finished on top at the 84th Clifford Cup Boxing Championship held at the Linea Gymnasium, Pallekele from 14th to 17th December. Army recorded their win with 4 Golds, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronz medals in their bag while the Air Force (3 Golds and 2 Silvers) and MAS Holdings finished second and third respectively.

Female boxers of the Army emerged second in the female category with 3 Gold medals and 4 Silver medals. Lance corporal Karunarathne S. D. N. S. was adjudged the Best Female Boxer and Private Rathwatte U. G. W. J. was adjudged the Best Looser in the female category.

While Lance Corporal Premasinghe P.P.D.N Heavy Weight 91 Kgs, Lance Corporal Divaratne M.A Middle Weight 75 Kgs, Private Weerakkody W.R.T Banam Weight 56 Kgs and Private Perera W.A.C.I Light Fly Weight 49 Kgs wining Gold Medals Lance Bombardier Herath H.M.R.C Heavy Weight 91 Kgs and Private Chandrakumar A.P.S Welter Weight 69 Kgs won Silver Medals and Trooper Tharanga M.M Super Heavy Weight 91 Kgs and above and Private Muhad M.M.U light Welter Weight 64 Kgs won Bronze Medals in men’s category.  

In women’s category Private Weerasinghe T.M Heavy Weight 81 Kgs, Lance Corporal Karunaratne S.D.N.S Light Welter Weight 64 Kgs and Lance Corporal Sumudu P.K Light Weight 60 Kgs won Gold Medals and Private Ratwatte U.G.W.J Middle Weight 75 Kgs, Private Salgadu M.P.K Feather Weight 57 Kgs, Sergeant Chandrika L.G Fly Weight 51 Kgs and Private Priyadarshani H.S Light Fly Weight 48 Kgs won Silver Medals.
