Army Awards Cash Prizes & Appreciates Talents of Commonwealth Weight-Lifting Tournament

Sri Lankan Army achievers in the recent Commonwealth Weight Lifting Championship in Penang, Malaysia were lauded and awarded cash prizes during a brief meeting at the office of Chief of Staff Major General Chrishantha de Silva at Army Headquarters on Monday (17) on the instructions of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake.

Corporal C.S.S.P Wijesuriya of 2 (v) Sri Lanka Army General Services Corps and Corporal M.D.M.U Dissanayake 2 (v) Sri Lanka Army General Services Corps won two Silver Medals and one Bronze Medal in the overseas Championship Tournament under 69 kg and 56 kg weight categories, challenging competitors from 27 Commonwealth countries in the world.

A National Team comprising 25 Sri Lankan athletes attended the tournament, of which 8 represented the Sri Lanka Army.
Major General Chrishantha de Silva appreciating their performances under coaches, Mr A.E Wijewickrama and Mr N.N Athukorala extended his best wishes on their future involvements and assured the Army’s best support for their development of skills.

The Championship Tournament in Malaysia was held from November 24 -30, 2013 to coincide with CHOGM in Colombo during the same fortnight.
