Army Athletes Set Two New National Records During ‘Relay Carnival - 2013’

Sri Lanka Army runners, in the just concluded three-day BoC Relay Carnival - 2013 at Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium made two new Sri Lankan records and won the overall Inter-Club Men’s Championship.

Army athletes in the open event category established a new record in the 4 x 1500m event with a new timing of 15.52.99 seconds which eclipsed the existing record of 15.55 seconds also set by Army athletes in the year 2003.

The second Army record was in the 4 x 800m relay event. The Army contingent ended with a new record of 7.33.13 seconds, beating the existing record of 7.34 seconds, established earlier by the Navy. In the women’s category (4x800m), the Army team was placed second. 

Army runners accordingly shone and bagged the men’s Championship with 47 points while Navy runners and Air Force athletes claimed 43 points and 29 points respectively to be placed as second and third winners. Army women’s team clamed second placed with 41 points.

However, the Army ‘B’ team competing in the same (4 x 1500m) men’s relay secured the second place taking 16.18.97 seconds and pushing Air Force team to the third place. Similarly, Army ‘B’ team emerged the first runners-up by clocking 7.33.13 seconds.

‘Relay Carnival - 2013’, conducted by the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka had its awards ceremony on Sunday (2) evening with the participation of BoC deputy general manager.

The Army quartet (Army’s ‘A’ team) in the 4 x 800m relay, the winners of the event had the challenge coming only from their own ‘B’ team which finished second. However, in the men’s 4 x 100m relay, Army clocked an impressive 41.02 seconds to win. 

Sri Lanka Army’s dominance in the tournament was disturbed only in the women’s 4 x 100m relay where Sri Lanka Air Force bagged the title recording a timing of 46.82 seconds.
