Army's SLSR Junior Club Offers Breakfast to Children's Orphanage

The ‘Young Cougars’ Club’, the one and only junior club that brings all youngsters in Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) Seva Vanitha families under one umbrella, marking its entry into the field of social services, had a worthwhile cause as its pilot project on Vesak Full Moon Poya Day (May 17).

The club, founded in late April this year as the brainchild of Major General D.R.A.B Jayatillake, Colonel of the Regiment, SLSR, is spearheaded by Mrs Rani Jayatillake, Chairperson, SLSR Seva Vanitha Unit with a membership of about 40 youngsters.

Their first field visit on account of Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi commemoration, saw some 70 orphaned children, resident at Sri Jinananda Children’s Development Centre, Wellawatta receive a wholesome breakfast plus many gift parcels donated by Boogitha Lokuketagoda towards the end of the programme. A Calypso music group added colour to the event singing religious songs and renting the air with similar melodies.

The orphanage, managed by Ven Urumute Sugathananda Thera, houses seventy children left destitute by their parents, some of who are now about to sit the (G.C.E A/L) examination.

The ‘Young Cougars’ Club’ on the instructions of Mrs Jayatillake collected resources for the project and actively took part in offering the treat to those children at the centre. Ven. Urumute Sugathananda Thera acknowledged the exemplary gesture of those young donors and invoked blessings on them and all others associated with the project.

Active Club members including Master Tharindu Jayatillake, office-bearers and over 30 Club members participated in the programme.

Brigadier A.M.R Dharmasiri, SLSR Centre Commandant, and several senior officers, their spouses and well-wishers attended the occasion.
