Army's Newest 'Resource Centre' to Begin Its Vocational Training Programmes Soon

Plans are afoot by the Army to set up a fully-fledged vocational training centre, ‘Ranaviru Sampath Kendraya’ (Resource Centre for War Heroes) for the express purpose of tapping potential of the Army’s disable and retired personnel.

The project, a novel concept proposed by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, is to be established in Hendala area with the technical support received from Sri Lanka Vocational Training Authority through the Army’s Directorate of Rehabilitation.

Construction of the state of the art training centre, now fast nearing completion with renovations enables both state and private sectors to make use of untapped potential of those Army personnel who, in most cases continue to remain very much unemployed because of disability or retirement.

A preliminary discussion on preparation of the curricula and other practical modalities that should be put into practice soon after its opening took place at the same venue in Hendala early this week.

Major General R.V Samaratunge, Director, Directorate of Army Rehabilitation chaired the meeting, attended by Mr Jayantha De Silva, Director, Vocational Training Authority (Admin), Mr Sumith Athukorala, Training Manager, Mr Sharman Thotawatte, Coordinating Secretary, Mr K.A Lalithadeera, Director for Gampaha District and a few other officials.

Attendees from the Vocational Training Authority assured the Army of its fullest cooperation and promised to award the internationally-recognized NVQ certificate to the trainees upon completion of their training, which is to be initiated around the latter part of June, this year. Under the scheme, all categories of Army personnel including those who are still serving are able to receive specific training as they wished in a wide variety of trades.
