Army’s First Gymnastic Tournament, a Big Success

The finals and the closing ceremony of the first-ever Inter Regiment Gymnastics Tournament (novices) in the Army, organized by the Army Gymnastic Sport Committee, took place Friday (23) evening at Panagoda Army Cantonment.

Major General S.R Manawadu, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, South witnessed the final encounter as the Chief Guest.

This introducing field of sports, new to the Army was conducted under three categories; Ground Exercises, Parallel Bars, Long Horse, with the participation of 70 novices, selected from 13 Regiments in the Army.

Gemunu Watch Regiment, players emerged overall winners in all three categories in the finals. 

Although there was an enormous interest among soldiers for the event the organizers were compelled to restrict the games to a total of 70 sportsmen, to begin with. Six players competed for each game category during the one-day’s tournament.

Trophies to the winners were awarded by the Chief Guest. Several senior officers and fans of Gymnastics attended the event.
