Aluthgama People Felicitate Armed Forces & Police for Dedicated Restoration Work

Aluthgama Development Foundation (ADF), together with victims in the violence that erupted in June 2014 around Aluthgama, Dharga Town, Welipenna and Beruwala areas in a special ceremony at Dharga Town on Friday (16), felicitated the services of Army troops, Navy, Air Force, Police and Civil Security Department (CSD) for their excellent contribution for renovation of damaged properties and other peripheral infrastructure facilities.

Under the supervision of Major General U.A.B Medawela, the then Commander, Security Force Headquarters - West, tri service troops and CSD personnel, numbering about 200 actively contributed to the restoration programme, launched on the directions of Dr Rajitha Senaratne (MP), Minister of Health, in close cooperation with various state and private sector agencies.

The reconstruction and restoration project covered 233 houses and 86 commercial buildings that were either completely destroyed or partly damaged at a cost of Rs 134 million within a span of nearly 8 - 10 months after the unfortunate incident.

The felicitation ceremony at Ishan Athul Islam - Home for the Orphans, Dharga Town, headed by Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne as the Chief Guest and Major General U.A.B Medawela and District Secretary for Kalutara as Guests of Honour, saw 40 tri service, Police and CSD personnel receive certificates of appreciation from the ADF which was instrumental in restoration and reconstruction in the area.

A large gathering of beneficiaries of all ethnicities, victims and family members, clergy, distinguished guests and invitees participated in the ceremony. Minister Senaratne and a few others delivered speeches and hailed the roles of the armed forces.
