68 Division Athletes Emerge Achievers in SFHQ-MLT Meet

The finals of the Inter-Division Athletic Meet of the Security Force Headquarters – Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) got underway at the 18 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) grounds in Mullaittivu with the participation of all under command troops of the Forward Maintenance Area - Mullaittivu, Divisions, Brigades and Battalions on Tuesday (28).

Preliminary rounds of the said tournament were held during March 27-28. The inaugural speech and the declaration of the official inauguration were delivered by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 68 Division, Brigadier P.A.D Kahapola who also lit the Olympic Torch to kick off the event.

1 Officer and 149 Other Rankers of the SFHQ-MLT representing the FMA-MLT and all other competitive Divisions participated in 21 different athletic events during this inter-division SFHQ-MLT athletic meet of the year.

During the presentation ceremony, Major General Dampath Fernando, Commander, SF-MLT as the Chief Guest awarded trophies, certificates and medals to the competitors who excelled during the meet.

The overall championship of the Inter-Division Athletic Meet - 2017 was secured by the 68 Division, having obtained 289 points with Gold (13), Silver (09) and Bronze (08) while the best athlete award was won by Lance Corporal B.N.N Basnegge of the 14 VIR in Triple Jump event.

Arranged on the directions of Major General Dampath Fernando, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu (SF-MLT), it was conducted under the close supervision of the General Officer Commanding, 68 Division, Brigadier, P.A.D Kahapola.

The aim of this athletic meet was to tap hidden sport and athletic talents of the soldiers and elevate them to suit national and international standards.

In addition to the Track and Field events, physical training demonstrations and band displays, together with cultural shows added glamour and colour to the closing ceremony at the SFHQ – MLT.
