66 Division Takes Lead Cultivating Coconuts with Civilians

A comprehensive project to make cultivation of coconuts in the general area of Pooneryn more attractive has been launched by the 66 Division Headquarters of the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN), following an initiative taken by Major General Duminda Keppetiwalana, General Officer Commanding, 66 Division.

After preparing a demonstrative nursery for coconut planting within the Arasapurakulam Battalion Training School premises and also digging an agrarian well of 22 ft in depth and 12 ft in diameter at a cost of Rs 150,000/= at the same site, the 66 Division Headquarters managed to get a large stock of coconut seedlings with sponsorship, provided by Silver Mill Group Company Limited in Giriulla to the value of Rs 2 million.

As a part of the project, 66 Division Headquarters around the same time took steps to distribute more than 2000 coconut seedlings among civilians who are willing to cultivate those seedlings in their residential compounds.

In addition, the Silver Mill Group provided assistance for supply of fertilizer, technical advice, tools, preparation of agrarian wells and all other necessary guidelines free of charge to those civilians who received coconut saplings.

Inauguration of the agrarian well at the Battalion Training School, and the subsequent distribution of coconut saplings among Pooneryn civilians took place in the presence of Major General Duminda Keppetiwalana, General Officer Commanding, 66 Division and several Officers.

The project kicked off with the blessings of Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi was witnessed by a gathering of representatives of donors, supporters, civilians and Army personnel.
