The ongoing ‘Wanaropa’ National Tree Planting Campaign, introduced by HE the President, received another impressive stimulus when 65 Division troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) contributed to the project by distributing 143 jack tree saplings among 120 students in Thunukkai Tamil Mixed school in Kilinochchi on Friday (2).
At the invitation of the school principal, Mrs Thanapalasingham, Major General Sarath Weerawardana, General Officer Commanding, 65 Division planted the first sapling in the school premises and advised students to care for each tree sapling they plant in the coming 6 months to be eligible for receipt of a special gift from the General Officer Commanding.
At the same time, name boards that read the name of each caretaker - student responsible for the growth of each sapling was also distributed as a novel initiative.
The ceremony was organized by the Commanding Officer and troops of the 21(V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) on the directions of the GOC 65 Division.
Meanwhile, the 65 Division troops during a ceremony at Thunukkai public playground launched another tree planting programme around the ground perimeter at Thunukkai on Saturday (3).
Troops of the 10 SLLI, 21(V) SLLI and 15 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) serving the 65 Division have already planted 1180 tree saplings covering a distance of 40 km from Mankulam to Vellankulam (B 269). At the same time, troops ensured tree saplings planted earlier are given due protection along the same road and replaced the dead ones.
Senior Military Officers, Principal, Teachers, OIC Mallavi Police Station, Secretary to Thunukkai Pradeshiya Sabha, Grama Niladiri for Thunukkai, Development Officer & Sports Officer in the District Secretariat Office, Thunukkai, Chairman & members from Lucky Star Sports Club – Thunukkai, a few parents and villagers also took part in the programme.
A large group of troops of the 65 Division attended by Colonel H.D.K Heiyanthuduwa, Colonel General Staff contributed to the success of the project.
