The final match of the Army Inter Division Rugby Championship tournament of the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) was played at the 64 Divisional Headquarter Grounds in Mullaittivu on Wednesday (1).
Major General Dampath Fernando, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu (SF-MLT), joined others to witness the encounter as the Chief Guest on the occasion at the invitation of the chief organizer of the tournament, Brigadier P.I Pathirathna, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 64 Division.
Brigadier P.I Pathirathna, GOC, 64 Division, received the Chief Guest on arrival at the venue and conducted him to the pavilion.
Before commencing the finals of the tournament, each team was introduced to the day’s Chief Guest, including the judges who represent the Sri Lanka National Rugby Judges’ Association.
64 Division and 59 Division teams battled it out for the Rugby Championship in the SFHQ-MLT and finally the 64 Division team grabbed the championship.
The preliminary rounds of the matches in the tournament were held during 11-26 February at the 64 Division Headquarters and four teams of the SFHQ-MLT fought against one another to clinch the victory.
Major General Dampath Fernando after extending his warm congratulations to the winners presented the Championship Trophy to the 64 Division players amidst thundering applause.
During the presentation ceremony, Major T.M.M.M.M.W Tennakoon of 26 Gajaba Regiment (GR) achieved the award for the Best Convertor while Private R.M.S Bandara of 26 Gajaba Regiment (GR) received the Best Player award.
General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, a large gathering of senior officers and other rankers watched the finals.
