59 Division Anniversary Events Select 'Strongest Soldier'


Religious and military formalities marked the series of the 7th anniversary commemorative arrangements of the 59 Division Headquarters of the Security Force Headquarters-Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT).

On the directions of Brigadier N.A.P.C Napagoda, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 59 Division, the ceremonies started with an all night Pirith chanting plus a Heel Daana (breakfast), the following day (Dec 12). 

The occasion saw monks transferring merits to the fallen War Heroes and invoking of blessings on those serving the 59 Division and the Army in general.

A Hindu religious ceremony was also held at the Kannaki Amman Kovil, Vattappalai on Friday (12) to coincide with the 7th anniversary.

As one more project of the anniversary arrangements, the General Officer Commanding unveiled a plaque and declared opened a newly constructed main entrance to the 59 Division Headquarters.

On the same day, troops accorded a Guard Turnout and a Guard of Honour to the General Officer Commanding in accordance with military formalities. The day’s programme followed an all rank lunch.

All Army personnel, belonging to Brigades, Battalions and Units under the 59 Division afterwards participated in the competition for selection of the ‘Strongest Soldier’ on a proposal made by the GOC, 59 Division.

On Sunday (14) Brigadier N.A.P.C Napagoda afterwards awarded prizes and certificates to officers and soldiers who won in the ‘Strongest Soldier’ competition. The event ended with a mega musical evening.
