An attempt to introduce a new breed of paddy seeds, 'Swayanjatha' which can be grown without agro-chemicals, insecticides or fertilizer was introduced to 64 selected farmers in the general areas of Kilinochchi on Monday (18) during an awareness session conducted at Kilinochchi Facility Centre in consultation with Agricultural experts in the Department of Agriculture.
Aimed to support improve the living standards of rural farming communities, the 57 Division Headquarters of the SFHQ-KLN took the initiative in this regard. Seedlings of this new paddy variety and egg seeds were accordingly distributed among those attendees. .
Major General Vijitha Ravipriya, General Officer Commanding of 57 Division, distributed two seedlings to each farmer with seeds during the brief arrangement in the presence of a few state officials. The variety produces harvest within a year and is financially profitable.
