56 Division Makes Elaborate Vesak Arrangements with Civilians

Special corriander water and gram serving ‘Dansel’ (free eating houses), display of colourful Vesak lanterns, recital of devotional songs, multi-coloured decorations and several other programmes, organized in the 56 Division Headquarters, Kokeliya, Vavuniya, adorned Vavuniya city and its suburbs, following initiatives taken by 56 Division Headquarters on account of Vesak.

The colourful recital of devotional songs, presented by Daham school students of Ven Gunaratana Thera’s ‘Yansing’ Buddhist Institute at Galewela, added a novel experience to the civilians in Vavuniya and suburbs.

Most creative and colourful lanterns, crafted by soldiers and on display at the 56 Division Headquarters received cash prizes as incentives. It has been organized on the instructions of the Brigadier N.A.P.C. Napagoda, General Officer Commanding, 56 Division.

Major General A.K.S. Perera, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni, Mrs P.H.M. Charles, District Secretary for Vavuniya, Brigadier N.A.P.C. Napagoda, Brigadier D.A.R. Ranawaka, Commander, 561 Brigade and several other senior officers inaugurated the Vesak lantern competition at 56 Division Headquarters after lighting the traditional oil lamp.

Meanwhile, a mammoth Dansela to provide lunch to all those who pass by and reside in Omanthai roadblock area, commenced at about noon on Vesak Day (May 5) after a brief ceremony.

Over 1000 civilians had their lunch from this free eating house on that day as one more feature of the Vesak celebrations. Meanwhile, 561 Brigade Headquarters on Saturday (5) freely distributed cooked manioc yams, among civilians living in the 561 Brigade area on account of Vesak Day.

Brigadier N.A.P.C. Napagoda, General Officer Commanding, 56 Division, at the invitation of Brigadier D.A.R Ranawaka, Commander 561 Brigade opened the manioc Dansela after lighting the traditional oil lamp.

In the meantime, the Battalion Training school at Kanagarayankulam under 56 Division Headquarters had its new shrine room opened in connection with the Vesak commemoration on Sunday (6).
