24 Division in Ampara Celebrates Sinhala & Tamil New Year Festival

24 Division troops of the Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E), giving prominence to ancient traditions, celebrated ‘Bakmaha Ulela’ with their beloved families and close relatives for the second consecutive year at the 24 Division Headquarters on Wednesday (11) in Ampara.

The ‘Bakmaha Ulela’ commenced with a 12 km long marathon and was ceremonially inagurated by Major General Mahinda Mudalige, General Officer Commanding 24 Division as the Chief Guest by hoisting the national flag and lighting the traditional oil lamp in the company of Brigadier P.A.D Kahapola, Commandant, Combat Training School, Ampara. Senior officers of other sister services. Police and STF Senior Officers were also present.

Almost all the troops on the directions of General Officer Commanding, 24 Division, Major General Mahinda Mudalige participated in the event with their family members/relations and it was a platform to promote solidarity among them. The event comprised of all traditional New Year games saw winners were awarded with valuable gifts. Similarly, all the children who attended were also given symbolic gifts.

The role played by the troops at 'Gemi Gedara' was highly spectacular to all attendees. A delicious buffet lunch was provided to all attendees and transport was arranged to nearest towns after the festival.

The programme concluded with a musical show, presented by the 3 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment Band.
