22 Division Assists Funeral Ceremony of Nayake Thero

The final cremation ceremony of Most Ven Dehiowita Piyatissa Nayake Thero, Chief Sanghanayake for North, East and Thamankaduwa regions and the incumbent at Trincomalee, China Bay Sri Bodhirajaramaya, Anandama Tissa Maha Viharaya, Dimuthugama Samudrasanna Vivekaramaya, Wilamkulama Divulwewa Raja Maha Viharaya who passed away a few days ago takes place this evening (22) at Trincomalee Maxweber grounds.

22 Division Headquarters of the Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E) on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake and the Commander, Security Forces - East, Major General Aruna Jayasekara joined hands with Chief Monks, District Secretariat, local authorities, Navy and Air Force, Police, Dayaka Sabha, temple organizations and volunteers in order to support the conduct of the funeral of the late monk.

22 Division troops on the directions of Major General W.A.N.B Weerasinghe, General Officer Commanding, 22 Division since the Day-1 have been offering their assistance for provision of alms to visiting monks and refreshments to mourners, construction of the pyre with civilians, erection of saffron-coloured flags on roadways and inside the temple, supply of petals as offerings, transport facilities, etc.

Together with Senior Officers of the Navy, Air Force and the Police, Major General W.A.N.B Weerasinghe, GOC, 22 Division and a large gathering of Army personnel of Brigades under the 22 Division took part in the funeral procession and paid their respect to the departed monk who had served the East, irrespective of ethnic differences.

Ven Piyatissa Nayake Thero (58) entered monkhood in 1980 after arriving at Trincomalee China Bay Sri Bodhirajaramaya under the tutelage of late Ven Rambukkana Sri Saddhalankara Nayke Thero who was killed after a few years during the reign of IPKF control in the area.

Ven Piyatissa Nayake Thero, during the height of LTTE terrorism in the East gave leadership to all communities affected by terrorists in hiding and presided a number of multi ethnic organizations and associations in the Eastern region and went to the extent of attending to the needs of War Heroes, family members affected by LTTE terrorism and the victims of terrorists.
