1st SLAWC Players Win Netball Championship

Woman netball players of 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps and 2nd Battalion Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps during their finals at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium Colombo Wednesday (9) evening showed their talents before a large gathering of sports-lovers.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, together with Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) graced the finals as Chief Guest at the invitation of the Army Netball Committee.

The finals of the Inter Regiment Netball Tournament, held for the seventh consecutive year were competed by players in 1 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (1 SLAWC) and 2 SLAWC with a lot of excitement and cheering.

The close competition saw 1 SLAWC team won the overall Championship while 2 SLAWC team clinched the runners-up trophy.  Private K.K.M Fernando of 1 SLAWC was adjudged the Netball Queen of the finals. Warrant Officer II K.K.D Jayasinghe of the 1 SLAWC was adjudged the Best Shooter while the Private A.A Udeni of 1 SLAWC was selected as the Best Centre Court player and Lance Corporal Udani of 2 SLAWC was adjudged the Best Defender.

On 22nd and 23rd October seven teams from SLAWC Battalions and Sri Lanka Army Military Police had their preliminary competition in the tournament at the Carey Collage Indoor Stadium.

Before the commencement of the final, a friendly exhibition netball match between the Army team and the Navy team added further significance to the event. The Army beat the Navy in this encounter.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya awarded the Championship trophy to the winners as the final item on the day’s agenda.

Lieutenant Colonel M.H.P Perera, former Chairperson, Sri Lanka Netball Committee who rendered an invaluable service to uplift the sport in the Sri Lanka Army was awarded a special merit award in recognition of the commitment.

The Coach of the Army Netball Team Warrant Officer II, P.D.N Prasadi who has been representing the National Netball Team for 10 years from 1993 to 2003 and recognizing the talents of Private K.K Jayaweera who secured a Gold Medal during the recent Hambantota Beach games for Netball were presented with special merit awards at the same occasion.

Brigadier K.W Edema, Regimental Centre Commandant SLAWC, Senior Officers, Chairperson for Netball Committee (Army) and a large gathering witnessed the final competition.
