'Paritta' Chanting Invokes Blessings on Mihindu Seth Medura Anniversary

The state-of-the-art centre for solace for differently able War Heroes of our times, ‘Mihindu Seth Medura’ at Attidiya which saw its birth as the brainchild of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, marked its third anniversary in a fitting ceremony.  

The commemorative arrangements includes a Pirith chanting ceremony, alms-giving, musical programme with inmates and a fellow-lunch treat, scheduled during June 6 - 8 at the premises.

With the participation of the project’s trailblazer Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence & Urban Development as the Chief Guest, the ceremony inaugurated with an overnight Pirith chanting on Friday (6) evening.

Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, MoD Seva Vanitha Unit, Chief of Defence Staff, Tri-service Commanders, senior tri-service officers a representative group of next of kin of fallen and disable War Heroes, and a gathering of invitees participated in the inaugural commemoration ceremony.   

Soon after the Chief Guest’s arrival, members of the Maha Sangha were conducted to the venue in a colourful procession, preceded by several dancing groups for commencement of Pirith chanting.

The mentor of the project, Mr Rajapaksa after respectfully accepting the sacred relic casket from the Maha Sangha placed it in the traditional Pirith Kotuwa (octagonal structure for recital) and invited the monks to begin chanting after offering the Deheth Wattiya (tray of betel), in accordance with age-old religious traditions.

A large gathering, including inmates at Mihindu Seth Medura, senior Army officers, relatives and other invitees participated in the inaugural religious performances in the colourfully lit premises.

Mr Rajapaksa mingling with the inmates afterwards did not forget to share a couple of thoughts with them and inquired into the progress of their well-being during his brief stay at the place before his departure.  

Management and administration of the ‘Mihindu Seth Medura’ with some 50 plus inmates as the one and only western province-based wellness resort, was entrusted to the Army after the Ministry of Defence, became highly impressed with the routine conduct of its affairs at the pilot ‘Abimansala’ wellness resort project at Anuradhapura, now fully operational with 52 dependent War Heroes of the North Central Province.    

Its interactive programmes are scheduled to get underway on Sunday (8) with the participation of all inmates and their family members.

A musical entertainment plus a lunch treat to all attendees in the same afternoon on Sunday (8) culminates the second anniversary programmes.

Commandant at ‘Mihindu Seth Medura’, senior officers and other ranks on the directions of the Commander of the Army took measures to organize the event.
