'Mihindu Seth Medura' Anniversary Programmes End with Family Get-Together

Ministry of Defence-founded Mihindu Seth Medura (wellness resort) for dependant War Heroes at Attidiya on Sunday (8) took form of a lively hubbub of interactive family get-together plus the commemoration of its 3rd anniversary.

Mihindu Seth Medura, the brainchild of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence & Urban Development was founded at Attidiya three years ago in order to accommodate about 50-52 dependant War Heroes who need 24 hour vigil for the rest of their lives due to the serious nature of disability or injury. Its maintenance is managed by the Army.

Almost all the next of kin of those dependant War Heroes, together with sons and daughters of those inmates, were at the venue to enjoy a special get-together and the luncheon treat, organized by the management on account of the 3rd anniversary celebrations.

Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence & Urban Development Seva Vanitha Unit as the Chief Guest for this final segment of the anniversary programme, enthusiastically graced the occasion, accompanied by Mrs Indu Ratnayake, Additional Secretary to Ministry of Defence & Urban Development and Mrs Lali Kobbekaduwa, the spouse of the late war veteran, General Denzil Kobbekaduwa.

Parents, spouses and children of those War Heroes at Attidiya had a complete day of fun and entertainment with a galaxy of film stars, popular singers and comedians, some of who voluntarily joined the occasion to entertain those inmates and their family members who were visiting them at the invitation of its Commandant, Colonel Vajira Kariyawasam. In addition, donors and philanthropists who supported the birth of this centre of solace were also present to contribute to the second leg of the anniversary arrangements.

On Friday (6) the anniversary celebration got to a start with a Pirith chanting ceremony, plus an alms-giving on the following day (7). Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence & Urban Development, tri-service Commanders and their spouses graced the inaugural anniversary religious programmes.

Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa on Sunday (8) took a personal interest in the conduct of the event, speaking to each and every dependent War Hero who was in high spirits in the company of beloved ones during her stay there. Artistes present at the occasion added fun and rhythm to the entertainment, prompting some of the inmates to join the dancing floor, some of them with their kids.

The get-together with a sumptuous lunch treat saw those War Heroes receive gift parcels from the day’s Chief Guest as symbols of eternal gratitude before the end of the arrangements.

Mr David Peiris, Chairman, Arpico, Mrs Anoja Weerasinghe, Ms Yashoda Wimaladharma, MoD officials, Seva Vanitha members, and other invitees watched the day’s anniversary arrangements.
