'Gunner Supercross - 2011' Stuns Minneriya with Exciting Motorbike &;amp; Car Races

‘Gunner Supercross - 2011’, the sporting pride of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) got underway at Minneriya Artillery Complex tracks on Sunday (10) to a packed crowd of more than 25000 - 30000 sport enthusiasts and motor racing fans.

The exciting event, organized for the 6th consecutive time was held in collaboration with Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDR). Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army graced the occasion as Chief Guest, accompanied by Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB).

Commander of the Army as one more milestone in the history of SLA during his visit to the Minneriya Artillery Complex to watch the ‘Gunner Supercross - 2011’ on the sidelines, declared open the newly-built SLA Sports Complex and its new Swimming Pool in the Minneriya SLA Complex along with Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, at the invitation of SLA Colonel Commandant Major General J.C Rambukpotha. On arrival the Chief Guest was received by Colonel Commandant and other senior officers.

Around the same time, Lieutenant General Jayasuriya distributed financial grants to many SLA disable War Heroes for construction of new houses for them and their families. At the same time, a model replica of a new house under construction by SLA for War Heroes was presented to a disable War Hero by the Commander of the Army, as a token of the houses the SLA, SVAB and Artillery Seva Vanitha Unit collectively expect to build for those War Heroes.

Adding more importance to the occasion, Major General Rambukpotha on behalf of all in the SLA Regiment presented a sum of Rs 2 million to the Commander of the Army for use in the SVAB, initiated ‘Brave Hearts’ fund-raising project that intend to build ‘Wellness Resorts’ for dependent War Heroes across the country.

Towards the end of the year’s mammoth motor racing event, the Commander was invited to give away trophies, certificates and prizes to the Drivers and Riders who won in racing events. The renowned Indian rider P.S Santhosh emerged the winner in the motorbike category while Pasindu Peiris carried away the trophy in the drivers category.
