'Gajaba Mela' Collects its Target for Physiotherapy Unit

‘GAJABA MELA-2010’, organized by Gajaba Regiment (GR) War Heroes to raise funds for welfare of disabled GR War Heroes at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium last Sunday (28) evening proved a great success as the organizers were able to bag  a record sum of about Rs 2.9 m, needed for construction of a new Physiotherapy unit cum Gymnasium at an estimated cost of Rs 3 m.  
 
 Gajaba Regiment War Heroes who became permanently disable and dependent for the rest of their lives are being taken care by Regimental Headquarters at Senapura camp, operating more or less as a recuperating venue for them. Those differently able War Heroes during their office hours produce toys, sweetmeats, yoghurt and many other tiny items for sale as they are not any longer capable of directly attending to military physical requirements.       

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya graced the occasion as Chief Guest and was received on arrival by Major General Lalith Daulagala, General Officer Commanding, Security Forces Headquarters, South (SFHQ-S).  

War Heroes in the Gajaba Regiment initiated this musical evening with the objective of raising their own welfare fund that can be used for the welfare of war-affected officers and soldiers in the Regiment. Organizers maintain that well-wishers have also pledged their support to the formation of the special fund. In addition, the GR Regimental Headquarters annually holds its Gajaba Super Cross at Saliyapura drawing thousands of motor racing enthusiasts. Funds collected by this event are also channeled to the welfare of GR soldiers.    

Sri Lanka Telecom, Ethisalat, Development Lottery and Cargills supported the musical event on Sunday (28) while Derana TV offered Media sponsorship.

Popular vocalists and performing dancers in the country, including Bathiya, Santhush, Ashanthi, Umariya, Amila Nadeeshani, Surendra Perera, Sathish Perera, Udesh Indula and Nilupuli Dilhara contributed to the success of the event, meant for collection of much-needed welfare funds.
 
A large crowd of music fans and spectators joined the evening that lasted for several hours. A host of senior Army Officers attended the event.
