More than 30 school and civil-sector football leagues in the Ampara district took part in a football tournament recently, following co-ordination, done by the troops serving Task Force - 3 at Akkaraipattu on directions given by the Security Forces Headquarters - East.
The finals at Ampara Weerasinghe playground got off the ground on Tuesday (10) amidst a large gathering of sportsmen and women, school students, teachers and civilians.
This day and night event was organized to promote harmony and reconciliation among all ethnicities living in the district.
In the school sector, Oluwil Al Hamara Madyama Maha Vidyalaya won the championship while footballers at Pottuvil Madyama Maha Vidyalaya emerged runners-up in the finals.
Thirukkovil Amman Sports Club footballers carried away the championship and the Gal Oya Heats Sports Club secured the runners-up trophy.
Major General S.A.A.L. Perera, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters - East, Brigadier H.A.N. Hapuarachchi, Colonel Commandant, Ampara Training School, Brigadier S.H.F.P. Perera, Commander, Task Force - 3, Mr Asanka Abeyratne, District Secretary for Ampara and a large gathering witnessed the finals.
