Mullaittivu Kannaki Amman Kovil had its annual one-week long Pooja on a grand scale with the participation of over 5 lakhs of devotees during May 28-June 5, 2012.
On the final evening (June 4) of the ceremony, Army troops serving 591 and 592 Brigade Headquarters under the 59 Division served free vegetarian meals to over 15,000 devotees, attending the overnight Pooja at this historic sacred place and provided first aid medical assistance for emergencies.
In response to a request made by the Chief kurukkal (priest) of the temple, Major General L.B.R Mark, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) organized an aerial drop of flowers and other offerings, as in the previous year during the peak stage of the Kovil ceremony on June 4 afternoon, following directions given by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development
In addition, prior to the commencement of the ceremony, hundreds of troops as directed by the Commander, SFHQ-MLT, cleaned up the entire Kovil premises and its surroundings with the use of Army tractors and equipment, following a request made to that effect by the trustees of the temple.
Similarly, the SFHQ-MLT, hours before the start of the ceremony, installed over 50 plastic drinking water tanks around the Kovil premises for drinking purposes and Army bowsers continued to re-fill those tanks during all 7 days of the ceremony until it came to an end.
In appreciation, the Chief Priest during his final invocation of blessings in the Maha Pooja blessed the Army and the Police for their unreserved support for the success of the ceremony.
Large crowds of devotees, hundreds of officers and soldiers of the Army joined Pooja sessions throughout the entire week of the Kovil ceremony.
