Hundreds of sports men and women from school clubs and other sports clubs in Kilinochchi area gathered at Paranthan, Kudirippu sports ground on Sunday (27) and participated in a football championship tournament, organized by 573 Brigade Headquarters on the instructions of Brigadier K.R.P Rowel, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division.

Six school teams and thirteen Sports Clubs vied during the preliminary matches. It was a move to promote sports skills among youngsters in the Kilinochchi province. 

In the school sector, Kilinochchi Maha Vidyalaya team played against Vaddakachchi Maha Vidyalaya footballers in the final encounter while Korakkankadu Vilapumi Sports Club had its tussle with the footballers of Vaddakachchi Lucky Star Sports Club in the final round. 

However, Championships went to the footballers of the Kilinochchi Maha Vidyalaya team and the Korakkankadu Vilapumi Sports Club respectively in the final encounter.

Best Goal Keeper as well as the Best Sportsman was also awarded merit trophies at the end of the tournament. Each school and other clubs were given a new football as a token of appreciation for their participation in the tournament.

Brigadier K.R.P Rowel, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division as the Chief Guest witnessed the final encounters and gave away championship trophies and other merit awards afterwards.  A large gathering of football fans, principals, teachers, civilians and Army officers viewed the tournament.
