Troops Close in on Prabhakaran

[Updated :: 2009-05-05 11:57:50 Hours || Home]

MILITARY spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanyakkara said that the Tiger leadership was confined to an area of 4.5 km in the ‘No Fire Zone’, South of Vellamullavaikkal and the troops were continuing with the humanitarian operation of evacuating the civilians trapped in the this area.

The 58, 53 and 59 Divisions of the Army were advancing from three different directions and moving towards the area where some of the key LTTE members and Tiger leader Prabhakaran were hiding, he said.

The 53 and 58 Divisions which linked up a few days ago are now advancing towards Prabhkaran’s hideout while the 59 Division is moving from another direction.

With the army breaching a 700-metre-long earth bund built by the Tigers moving across Rectavaikkal to Nanthikandal lagoon, a number Tiger bunkers had been destroyed by the military, sources said. (Courtesy : The Island)
