POONERYN lying on A 32 causeway that links with Jaffna peninsula starting from the northwest of Mannar receives resurrection as more and more state administrative apparatuses were taking root in the area.

Pooneryn, formerly a notorious LTTE stronghold, from where even artillery was fired fell into Army hands as the troops rolled on towards northward from Mannar.

Ministry of Defence in cooperation with the ongoing Uthuru Wasanthaya (Northern Spring) programme directed the Inspector General of Police to declare open the newly established Pooneryn Police Station on Sunday (28).

Subsequent to restoration of normal civil administration in all areas in the north after eradication of LTTE terrorism, the government on the initiatives of HE the President, Secretary Defence and Mr Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Presidential Advisor in charge of the Uthuru Wasanthaya programme.

Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya after opening the new Police Station said that many other new Police Stations in the north will be opened soon.

Balasuriya said the new police station was set up under the Government’s Uthuru Vasanthaya program on the initiative of the President, Defence Secretary and Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa.

Balasuriya said he has also laid the foundation stones for the proposed new police stations at Mankulam and Killinochchi on that day.

Work would be completed within six months under the sponsorship of a well-known private firm, he said. Balasuriya said several existing buildings were utilized to open the Pooneryn police station which is the last police outpost along the A-32 road.

He said nearly 10,000 people have re-settled in Pooneryn. The resettlement program is progressing rapidly in the North with the people busy rebuilding their homes and restarting their agriculture, fishing and other vocations with great enthusiasm. They were motivated with a sense of security and protection with the setting up of the new police stations, he said.

Divisional Secretary of Pooneryn, Commander of the 66 Division and several Police and tri-service officers attended the opening ceremony.
